Patna, January 6, 2026: Bihar continues to reel under an intense cold wave, with temperatures plunging sharply across the state.

Night-time mercury levels are falling steadily, and even daytime sunshine has failed to provide relief from the biting cold.

The Met department predicted a cold wave for the next three days:

According to the Meteorological Department, the cold is likely to intensify further over the next three days, with a possible drop of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures, raising the risk of severe cold wave conditions in most districts.

A cold day warning has been issued in 19 districts of North Bihar and 5 districts in the south-western part of Bihar.

Dense fog is expected to envelop several areas, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, and Nawada, from early morning hours.

Visibility may drop to as low as 100 metres, posing serious challenges for pedestrians and motorists.

In the state capital Patna, the minimum temperature dipped below 10 degrees Celsius for the second time this season on Monday.

Earlier, the mercury had dropped to 9.4 degrees Celsius on December 31 and further to 8.2 Degrees Celsius on January 1.

Although the sun appeared after several cloudy days, strong westerly winds rendered the sunshine ineffective, intensifying the chill instead of providing comfort.

Gaya is the coldest district in this winter season:

Gaya emerged as the coldest place in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 5.5 degrees Celsius, marking a sharp 8-degree drop within 24 hours.

According to the India Meteorological Centre, Patna, several parts of South and North-West Bihar witnessed a fall of 2 to 5 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures on Monday.

Despite expectations of light to moderate sunshine in districts such as Muzaffarpur over the next two days, icy westerly winds driven by the jet stream are likely to keep conditions harsh.

Cold winds descending from the Himalayan region are preventing temperatures from rising, while persistent minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius are making the cold feel far more severe than the official reading suggests.

Overall, Bihar continues to experience harsh and unforgiving winter conditions, with residents advised to take precautions against cold exposure and fog-related travel hazards.
