Rabri Devi criticized the Nitish government over lathi charge on 70th BPSC exam aspirants.
Patna December 7, 2024: Former Chief Minister Rabri Devi has criticized the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government for its handling of the BPSC aspirants’ protest regarding the normalization policy.
Rabri Devi remarks come after police initiated a lathi charge on the protesting students, which has drawn widespread attention.
Rabri Devi said the demands of BPSC students are legitimate:
Rabri Devi voiced her support for the students, asserting that their demand to remove the normalization system is valid and that peaceful protests are a democratic right.
“I strongly condemned the use of force against the students. They are the youths of Bihar and have a legitimate right to seek clarity and fairness from the government about the examination. The state administration should engage with the students, address their concerns, and resolve the issue instead of restoring coercive measures,” Rabri Devi said.
The normalization policy, which adjusts exam scores to account for variations in the difficulty level across different sessions, has been a contentious issue. Many aspirants believe it unfairly impacts their results.
Rabri Devi’s statement reflects growing political and public pressure on the government to address the grievances of these students in a more transparent and empathetic manner.
Arun Bharti criticized the opposition leaders:
Arun Bharti, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP from Jamui, criticized opposition parties for allegedly exploiting the peaceful protests of BPSC aspirants for political gain.
“There were anti-social elements. Influenced by opposition parties, infiltrated the demonstrations and incited unrest. It was an irresponsible practice,” Bharti said.
He stated that while student concerns about the normalization system are valid, such issues should be addressed through constructive dialogue rather than violent protests. Drawing from his own experience as a former student, Bharti emphasized the natural apprehension students feel when faced with changes in the examination system and called for peaceful solutions.
Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav has prominently voiced his support for the students, demanding the removal of the normalization system. Which has been a contentious point.
However, the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) has clarified that normalization will not be applied in the upcoming 70th Combined Preliminary Examination, signaling a step to address student concerns.
Bharti’s remarks highlight a divide between the ruling party and the opposition over the handling of student protests, with both sides framing the issue within their political narratives. The broader conversation remains focused on ensuring fairness and transparency in examinations while maintaining public order.
