Prem Kumar elected unopposed as speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

Patna, December 2, 2025: Senior BJP leader and nine-time MLA from Gaya Sadar, Dr. Prem Kumar, was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Following his election, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav escorted him to the Speaker’s chair, holding his hands and formally seating him, a symbolic display of bipartisan respect.

Nitish Kumar Congratulated Prem Kumar:

After the announcement, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulated Prem Kumar and said, “Today, Dr. Prem Kumar has been elected Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. On behalf of the entire House, I congratulate him. I thank the leaders and members of all parties for their support in the Speaker’s unanimous election.”

The Chief Minister added that Prem Kumar has a long record of excellent work as a minister and possesses vast administrative and legislative experience.

He urged all members to extend full cooperation to the Speaker in the smooth functioning of the House.

At Nitish Kumar’s request, MLAs from all parties stood and paid their respects to the newly elected Speaker, expressing their collective joy and support.

After his election, Kumar said, “I will fulfil my responsibility with complete honesty. Both the ruling party and the opposition are important in the House. It is essential for both to stand together. I will strive to take both along; this is extremely important in a democracy.”

Prem Kumar filed the nomination on December 1:

Kumar had filed the nomination for the post on Monday.

A senior BJP leader and former cabinet minister, he has won the Gaya Sadar seat for the ninth consecutive time.

He expressed gratitude to the people of his constituency, calling his repeated victory a mandate of trust and responsibility.

The 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly began its first session on Monday, which will continue until December 5, 2025.
