Patna January 22, 2025: Prashant Kishor, the chief of Jan Suraj, has described migration as the “biggest evil” affecting the people of Bihar, with women being the worst affected.
Addressing a gathering at the Shakti Samwad event held at the Bihar Satyagraha Ashram Tent City in Patna, Kishor shared his observations from a two-year padayatra across the state.
He remarked, “Women in Bihar are suffering the most. Even if the education system is in disarray, you bear the brunt. If your husband or son migrates for employment, you are also the ones who suffer the most.
Prashant Kishor pointed out people migrate to another state for jobs and studies:
Prashant Kishor highlighted the widespread compulsion for men to leave their families behind in search of work. “A large number of men are forced to migrate to other states for employment soon as they get married. They can only return home briefly, for occasions like Chhath Puja or other family programs.”
Criticizing the dire socio-economic situation, Kishor added, “Such a thing can happen only in Bihar, where women live alone for years, husbands leave for employment, and sons move out for studies. The sting of migration is the harshest sting here. There is hardly a village where the youth have not migrated. Out of 100 young men in a village, only 10 to 15 remain; the rest leave for employment or education.”
Kishor advocated for awareness of migration:
Calling for awareness and change, Prashant Kishor emphasized the role of women in transforming the state. “Women need to be aware because, when the system changes in Bihar, they will be the ones to benefit the most.”
His remarks underscore the urgent need for addressing migration by improving local opportunities, aiming to reduce the socio-economic burden on families, especially women, who are often left to shoulder the responsibilities alone.
