Patna: Patna police detained 14 persons and seized Rs 9.74 lakh out of circulation currency on Thursday.
Abhinav Dhiman, the City SP (west) of Patna confirmed the development. He said that the seized currency was in the denomination of Rs 2000. An FIR has been registered in Rupaspur police station.
“We have received information from army intelligence Lucknow about some people assembled in a flat (number 208) of heritage apartment near Patliputra railway station. Accordingly, we raided there and seized the money. We have also detained 14 persons in this connection,” Dhiman said.
“The questioning with the detained persons is currently underway. They were allegedly trying to change the out of circulation currency,” Dhiman said.
“We have also seized 14 mobile phones from their possession and their scanning is underway. We have found some photographs of the out of circulation currency notes from their mobile phones. Those photographs were sent to the people of other states. Our team is trying to contact them. We will soon arrest the kingpin of the racket. Three cars and one bike were also seized from them,” Dhiman said.
The Narendra Modi government had demonetized Rs 500 and 1000 old currency notes in 2016 and brought Rs 2000 currency notes in circulation. The Reserve Bank of India had withdrawn the Rs 2000 currency notes from circulation in the third week of May, 2023.
