Patna, April 10, 2026: In a significant political development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday took the oath of secrecy as a member of the Rajya Sabha, marking a major transition in his long political career.
Rajya Sabha chairman and vice president of India CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath ceremony in the presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister JP Nadda and many other leaders.
Nitish Kumar had travelled to New Delhi on Thursday, accompanied by JD(U) National Working President Sanjay Jha and Bihar Water Resource Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, to complete the necessary formalities.
A rare political milestone for Nitish Kumar:
With his induction into the Rajya Sabha, Nitish Kumar has joined a select group of leaders who have served in all four legislative bodies, including the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the Bihar Legislative Council, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

This achievement underscores his decades-long political journey that began in 1985.
End of Legislative Council tenure:
Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2026, and subsequently resigned from his position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on March 30.
His resignation brings to a close a long association with the Bihar Legislative Council, where he served four consecutive terms from 2006-2012, 2012-2018, 2018-2024 and 2024-2026.

Since becoming Chief Minister in November 2005, he largely remained a member of the Legislative Council rather than contesting Assembly elections.
Shift to national politics:
Speaking upon his arrival in New Delhi on Thursday, Nitish Kumar indicated his intent to transition fully to national politics.
He stated, “I have accomplished a lot of work in Bihar. Now, I felt that I should remain here.”
He further hinted at stepping down from his role in Patna, saying that he would resign in
In the coming days, the new leadership would take charge in the state.

Nitish Kumar’s move to the Rajya Sabha is being seen as the beginning of a new chapter in Bihar politics.
His likely resignation as Chief Minister could trigger a leadership change and reshape the political landscape in the state.
Given his vast administrative experience and influence, his presence in Parliament is expected to have a significant impact on national as well as state-level politics in the coming months.
