Patna, August 18, 2025: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday welcomed the BJP’s announcement of Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as the NDA’s candidate for the post of Vice President.

Nitish Kumar shared his support through a post:

In a social media post, Nitish Kumar said: “The decision to make Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan the NDA candidate for the post of Vice President is welcome. JDU will support C.P. Radhakrishnan. Best wishes to him.”

The announcement is politically significant as Nitish Kumar’s party, JD(U), has 12 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 4 in the Rajya Sabha, and their support is expected to strengthen the NDA’s tally.

Apart from Nitish Kumar, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also extended his greetings, saying: “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to C.P. Radhakrishnan on being declared the NDA candidate for the post of Vice President. Your experience, dedication and leadership will be a constant source of inspiration in the national interest.”

LJP (Ram Vilas) also supported C.P. Radhakrishnan:

The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), led by Union Minister Chirag Paswan, also announced its full support to C.P. Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s nominee for the post of Vice President of India.

In a statement, Paswan said Radhakrishnan’s selection, as a strong representative of the OBC community from Tamil Nadu, is a historic example of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National democratic Alliance’s commitment to social justice and inclusive development.

“The NDA, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, has always prioritized the policy of social justice, inclusion and sabka saath—sabka vikas. Radhakrishnan’s candidature is a living example of this resolution, sending a message that the voice of every section and every region of the country will be respected and represented at the national level,” Chirag Paswan said.

394 is the magical figure of winning the VP post:

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Out of the 786 members (after accounting for six recent resignations, including one MP from Barasat, West Bengal), a candidate requires 394 votes to secure victory.

Currently, the NDA enjoys a comfortable position with 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 129 in the Rajya Sabha, putting its total well above the required majority.

The election for the Vice President’s post has been necessitated by the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar (74) in July 2025 on health grounds.
