Patna, March 25, 2024: A male tiger was found dead in the Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve (VTR) in Bettiah division, officials confirmed on Monday.

The carcass was discovered on Sunday in the Manguraha forest area during a routine patrol by VTR staff.

Patrolling team spotted VTR in tiger lying on the ground:

“When we were patrolling in the Manguraha forest near Thori Barbal village, we found the carcass of a male wildlife animal. The matter was immediately reported to senior officers,” said a Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve spokesperson.

Following the alert, Dr. Neshamani K, Director-cum-Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), along with Pradyuman Gaurav, Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife) and Deputy Director of Valmiki Nagar Tiger Reserve, and other officials reached the site to conduct an inspection.

As per the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s (NTCA) Standard Operating Procedures, the carcass was recovered, and a postmortem was conducted on Monday in the presence of senior officials.

Territorial fight could be the reason of the incident:

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the wildlife animal died following a territorial fight with another male wildlife animal,” Dr. Neshamani said.

The VTR, located in West Champaran district, is Bihar’s only wildlife animal reserve and home to over 50 wildlife animals, according to the latest estimates.
