Patna, June 25, 2024: The JDU National Executive Committee meeting will be held in New Delhi on June 29. Party sources say Chief Minister Nitish Kumar—who is also JDU’s national president—may announce a few surprise decisions at the meeting.
The JDU national executive meets every six months:
Currently, Nitish Kumar is the National President, Vashishtha Narayan Singh is the National Vice President, KC Tyagi is Special Advisor-cum-Chief Spokesperson, and Alok Suman is Treasurer. JDU has a 100-member National Executive, which includes 32 executive members, 22 general secretaries, seven secretaries, the state president and state conveners from 22states. Most Bihar ministers are also part of the committee. All MPs are members as well. The national executive meets every six months.
Invitations have been sent, and attendance has been made mandatory for all members.
The top leadership will review the party’s performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, and also draw up plans for the Bihar Assembly polls and elections in states such as Haryana.
Sources say Nitish may take a call on the party’s national president post again. In the December national executive, Nitish had replaced Lalan Singh and reassumed the top post himself—a decision that was followed by JDU exiting the Grand Alliance and forming the government in Bihar with the BJP.
“Along with organization strengthening, many issues, including party expansion, will be discussed. The situation after the Lok Sabha elections will be reviewed. And if assembly elections are advanced in Bihar or in states like Haryana, plans will be prepared accordingly,” JDU National Vice President Vashishtha Narayan Singh said.
JDU will assess the loss of 4 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar:
This meeting also matters politically because under Nitish Kumar’s leadership, the NDA has played a key role in forming the government at the centre. JDU will also assess the loss of 4 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar—down from 16 in 2019 to 12 this time.
Sources further indicate that Nitish May also begin giving clarity on his political successor. There is curiosity in the party about whether Nishant Kumar—Nitish’s son—will be formally introduced into politics. Recently, several leaders, including JDU Magadh on-charge and former Food Commission Chairman, Vidyanand Vikal, publicly demanded that the party’s command be handed over to the younger generation. However, cabinet minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary had dismissed such talk as baseless.
