Indian Air Force helicopter took a precautionary landing in Muzaffarpur.
Patna October 2, 2024: An Indian Air Force helicopter made a precautionary landing in the floodwater in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday afternoon.
Subrat Kumar Sen, the District Magistrate of Muzaffarpur, confirmed that the incident occurred in the Aurai block of the district around 3 p.m.
The landing was carried out as a safety measure, and the pilots and support staff onboard helicopters were unharmed.
“When we learned about the incident, we initiated the rescue operation, assisted by the SDRF and successfully rescued the four officials onboard, including the pilot of the helicopter,” Sen said.
“As a precaution, we have rescued them to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital for a medical checkup. They are safe,” Sen said.
“We have informed the Indian Air Force officials about the incident and they will investigate the technical reasons behind the precautionary landing. During the investigation it appeared that the Indian Air Force Helicopter had been returning to Patna after delivering the food packets to flood-affected areas of Darbhanga,” Sen said.
The exact reason for the landing is still under investigation, but the sources suggest that the helicopter had technical issues while flying over Muzaffarpur.
The pilot skillfully avoided the crash by landing the helicopter in the middle of the floodwater.
Following the incident, the villagers arrived at the site by boat and took away the food packets from the helicopter.
The Indian Air Force has been deployed for food distribution in flood-affected regions of Bihar following the orders of CM Nitish Kumar. He conducted the aerial survey of the flood-affected districts of West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sheohar, Supaul, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Purnea, Araria and other places on Tuesday.
The flood has been exacerbated by unprecedented rainfall in Nepal’s catchment areas, which led to the release of large volumes of water from the Valmikinagar and Kosi Barrage between September 27 to 29.
