Patna November 4, 2024: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled the by-election for the Tirhut Graduate MLC Constituency in Bihar, setting December 5 as the voting date, with results to be announced on December 9.
ECI announcement was made after the resignation of JD(U) MLC:
This election became necessary after Deveshchandra Thakur, a former Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from the Janata Dal (United) (JDU), vacated the seat upon being elected as an MP from Sitamarhi.
According to an ECI official, candidates are required to submit their nomination by November 18, followed by scrutiny on November 19. The deadline for candidates to withdraw is November 21.
By-poll is expected to contest between JD(U) and RJD:
The by-election featured a direct contest between the JDU and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The JDU, representing the NDA alliance, has put forward Abhishek Jha as its candidate, while the RJD has nominated Gopi Kishan.
Both parties are making strong efforts to secure the seat, viewing it as significant in the broader political landscape of Bihar. This direct face-off is expected to highlight the ongoing rivalry between the NDA and the RJD in the state, with both camps claiming confidence in their victory.
This by-election has gained considerable attention, with both JD(U) and RJD eager to strengthen their presence in the Legislative Council.
The Tirhut Graduate Constituency, which represents graduate voters in the region, is seen as strategically important, and the contest between NDA-backed JD(U) and RJD could be indicative of the broader political climate in Bihar leading up to future elections.
Both parties have intensified their campaigns and are actively engaging with graduate voters to ensure a strong turnout.
