Patna, October 15, 2024: The doctors in all government medical colleges and hospitals across Bihar went on strike on Tuesday from 6.00 AM to 6.00 PM, disrupting the Outpatient Department (OPD) and routine surgeries.
During this period, only emergency services were operational during this period.
Doctors are showing solidarity with RG Kar Medical College:
The strike was organized in solidarity with the ongoing protest by junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who have been on strike for the last 10 days.
These doctors are protesting the lack of justice in a case involving a female trainee doctor and inadequate security measures for medical staff in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.
Doctors’ strike badly affected patients:
As a result of the strike, many patients with scheduled surgeries at key hospitals in Bihar, including Patna AIIMS, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna Medical College and Hospital, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur, Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Bhagalpur, Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital, Gaya, GMCH Bettiah, GMCH Purnea, GMCH Pawapuri and other medical colleges in Bihar faced postponements.
The West Bengal government is unaffected by the doctors’ strike:
The medical students of RG Kar Medical College have been on hunger strike for 10 days, with several of them experiencing severe health deterioration.
Despite some resignations, their protest has not yet influenced the Mamata Banerjee–led West Bengal government.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Bihar, through its Junior Doctor Network and Medical Student Network, has fully supported the Kolkata doctors’ movement and has announced a one-day strike in Bihar’s medical colleges as part of a nationwide solidarity action.
IMA’s national headquarters and the Bihar state branch have committed to supporting the strike, with doctors across the state participating in a strike to further press their demands for justice and improved working conditions.
