Patna, September 16, 2025: Ahead of the crucial Bihar Assembly polls 2025, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has made a major announcement for students of Bihar under the Bihar Student Credit Card Scheme.

The state government will provide interest-free education loans of up to Rs 4 lakh to students seeking higher education after class 12.

Earlier, under the scheme launched on October 2, 2016, as part of the Saat Nishchay Yojana, students from economically weaker sections were eligible for loans of up to Rs 4 lakh.

General applicants had to pay 4% interest, while women, disabled, and transgender students were charged just 1% interest.

From now on, all categories of applicants will receive the loan completely interest-free.

Nitish Kumar announced an extended repayment facility:

Along with making the loans interest-free, the government has also extended the repayment period.

For loans up to 2 lakh, repayment tenure increased from 60 months to 84 months and the repayment of loans above 2 lakh extended from 84 months to 120 months.

In a post on X, Nitish Kumar wrote, “Our aim is to ensure that the maximum number of students in the state can pursue higher education. These new facilities in the student credit card scheme will boost students’ morale and enable them to shape their own future as well as that of the state and the country.”

Political significance:

The move is being seen as a big pre-poll relief for students and parents in Bihar, where affordability often prevents higher education.

Political observers believe this decision will help Nitish Kumar reach out to young and first-time voters and their families before the assembly polls.
