Patna, April 2, 2024: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a major setback in Bihar after Muzaffarpur MP Ajay Nishad resigned from all party posts and its primary membership on Tuesday.

Soon after his resignation, Nishad joined the Congress in New Delhi in the presence of senior party leaders Pawan Khera and Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee president Akhilesh Singh.

Ajay Nishad announced his resignation on social media:

Announcing his decision on the social media platform X, Nishad addressed the BJP national president, JP Nadda, and stated, “Shocked by the betrayal of the BJP, I resign from all posts and primary membership of the party.”

Ajay Nishad, a two-time MP from Muzaffarpur, is expected to contest the Lok Sabha election from the same constituency as a Congress candidate.

Muzaffarpur has a sizable population from the Nishad (fisherman) community, where Nishad commands significant influence.

His resignation came after the BJP replaced him with Raj Bhushan Nishad as the party’s candidate for the upcoming polls.

Ajay Nishad will contest the Muzaffarpur seat on the Congress ticket:

The move reportedly left Ajay Nishad discontented, prompting his switch to Congress.

In the 2019 general elections, Nishad had won Muzaffarpur on a BJP ticket. The seat will go to the polls in the fifth phase on May 20, with nominations opening on April 26.
