Bihar Chief Minister asked officials to control crime.

Patna July 19: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the officials to take proactive measures to curb crime and bring criminals under control in the state.

Such a response from the Bihar Chief Minister came during the high-level meeting on law and order convened in Patna on Friday.

Bihar Chief Minister in action: Nitish Kumar emphasized the urgency of improving the law and order situation. He instructed the officials to intensify their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the people.

The Bihar government is facing criticism due to a series of violent incidents including murder, rape, gang rape, loot, and other crimes regularly occurring across the state.

The murder of Jitan Sahani, father of Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani, has particularly shocked the nation and tested the patience of the Bihar Chief Minister. This incident prompted him to call a high-level meeting on the law and order to address the escalating crime situation in Bihar. 

He directed the officials to enhance police patrolling on the roads and take action against the police officers exhibiting a lackluster approach to preventing crime incidents. He also emphasized the importance of resolving land disputes for the people of the state, recognizing that such disputes often contribute to the state’s crime rates.

Officials clarification: In addition to the Bihar chief minister, the high-level meeting on law and order saw the presence of Chief Secretary Brajesh Malhotra, DGP RS Bhatti and senior officials of Bihar police and civil administration. The DMs, SSPs and SP also participated through video conferencing.

During the meeting, RS Bhatti briefed the chief minister on the preventive measures taken by the department to control crime. He highlighted the effectiveness of the DIAL 112 emergency service in combating crime and presented data showing a decline in the crime rate in Bihar.

The district officials also shared their perspectives on the preventive measures they have implemented to control crime in their respective jurisdictions. They also pointed out the significant reduction of organized crime in the state.

What opposition leaders say: Opposition leaders are actively targeting Bihar government over the rising crime: The Leader of the Opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav, has been particularly vocal in criticizing the Bihar chief minister for the rising crime incidents. He has been issuing regular crime bulletins to highlight incidents.

What BJP leader said: Janardan Singh Sigriwal, the BJP MP from Maharajganj commented on the state’s governance and the crime situation.

He acknowledged that Bihar has a rule of good governance but he emphasized that if crime incidents continue to occur frequently, the provision should be considered as a measure to control crime.

“If state police are arresting criminals, that is good, but if required, the encounter could be another option that state police should look into.”
