Patna, July 23, 2025: The third day of the monsoon session of the Bihar Assembly witnessed a sharp confrontation between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, as the opposition continued its protest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Tejashwi raises SIR concerns, Nitish retorts in the Bihar Assembly:
Raising the SIR issue, Tejashwi Yadav said the opposition is not against voter list revision but against the Election Commission’s flawed process.
He argued that the poor do not have the 11 documents demanded by the EC, and that with over 4 crore people migrating from Bihar for work, there is a fear of mass deletion of names from the voter list.
“The Election Commission’s job is to conduct fair elections, not to prove citizenship. Both Deputy CMs are leaking selective information to the media,” said Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly.
Nitish Kumar responds, reminds of Lalu-Rabri era:
Amid continuous sloganeering, Nitish Kumar stood up, reminding Tejashwi of the state of Bihar during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s and Rabri Devi’s tenure.
“Your father was CM for 7 years, then your mother. What was the condition of Bihar then? We have done all the work, especially for women, and will take these achievements to the elections. You (Tejashwi) are a child then; you don’t know anything,” said Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister.
Bihar Assembly erupts over Bhai Virendra’s remarks:
As Deputy CM Vijay Sinha accused Tejashwi Yadav of misleading the public, RJD MLA Bhai Virendra pointed at him and used the term “hooliganism.”
The Speaker asked Bhai Virendra to apologize, but he refused, saying: “We will not apologize. I say again, the house is not anyone’s patrimony.”
The Speaker adjourned the house till 2:00 pm after the uproar continued, with Bhai Virendra’s comments sparking further disruption.
Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar held consultations with Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha in his chamber.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Chaudhary and Bijendra Yadav also met Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav.
Simultaneously, Tejashwi Yadav, along with opposition MLAs, met the Speaker seeking a discussion on SIR.
Deputy CMs launch counterattack:
Deputy CM Vijay Sinha and Ashok Choudhary demanded Bhai Virendra’s apology, stating: “They are misleading the public and tarnishing Bihar’s image.”
However, Bhai Virendra remained defiant, reiterating that the house does not belong to any individual or party.
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list has become a key point of confrontation ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
The opposition alleges the process could lead to the removal of poor and migrant voters’ names, while the government insists the revision is being done transparently to ensure a clean voter list.
