Patna, March 28, 2024: Prominent Bhojpuri singer and actor Gunjan Singh on Thursday filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from the Nawada Lok Sabha seat, after being denied a ticket by the BJP.
The party has fielded Vivek Thakur, son of senior BJP leader Dr. C.P. Thakur, from this constituency.
Gunjan Singh, accompanied by YouTuber Manish Kashyap and a large number of supporters, submitted his nomination before district returning officer Aushutosh Kumar Verma.
“I have filed my nomination today and I will win this election,” Singh declared, adding:
“I am a son of Nawada and know everything about this place. Why are political parties giving tickets to outsiders? Do they think the voters of Nawada are fools?”
Gunjan Singh further criticized the NDA’s performance in the constituency:
“For 10 years, NDA candidates have represented Nawada while governments have been in power both at the Centre and in the state. Still, there is no central school, a good hospital, or proper infrastructure. These will be my priorities if I win.
A Challenge to the BJP’s vote base:
Nawada has a significant Bhumihar population, considered a strong BJP vote bank. Gunjan Singh himself belongs to this community, raising concerns within the BJP that his candidature may cut into its core support base.
On the same day, BJP candidate Vivek Thakur and RJD’s Shrawan Kushwaha also filed their nominations.
Nawada goes to the polls in the first phase on April 19, with March 28 being the last date for filing nominations.
