Chandigarh, April 13, 2026: Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh on Monday extended warm greetings to people on the auspicious occasion of Poila Baisakh, marking the Bengali New Year.
The Governor was addressing a gathering at Kalibari, Chandigarh, during the annual celebrations of the Pran Pratishtha of Thakur Ramkrishna.
Lady Governor Mitra Ghosh was also present on the occasion.
Ashim Kumar Ghosh highlighted the festival of renewal and hope:
Describing the festival as a symbol of joy and fresh beginnings, Ashim Kumar Ghosh explained that “Poila” means first and “Baisakh” is the first month of the Bangali calendar.
Together, the festival signifies the start of a new year filled with hope, prosperity, and renewal.
Festival as a unifying force:
Ashim Kumar Ghosh emphasized the broader cultural significance of Indian festivals, noting that celebrations such as Diwali, Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, Gurupurb, Pongal and Poila Baisakh go beyond religious boundaries and strengthen the spirit of unity in diversity.

“These occasions foster mutual respect, promote cultural exchange, and reinforce harmony, compassion, and coexistence,” he said.
Traditional and cultural significance:
Highlighting unique customs associated with Poila Baisakh, Ashim Kumar Ghosh spoke about Halkhata Ceremony—where businesses open new account books and seek blessings for prosperity and Choitro Sales—festive shopping events marking the end of the previous year.

The Governor commended Kalibari Chandigarh for its role in preserving cultural heritage, especially among younger generations living away from their roots.
“Institutions like Kalibari play a vital role in sustaining our cultural identity and traditions,” he remarked.
Magazine release and felicitations:
During the event, the Governor and Lady Governor released Apabrinu, the annual magazine of Kalibari and the editorial team was felicitated for their contributions.

Prominent attendees included spiritual leaders such as Swami Shantatmananda, Swami Bhitiharananda, and other distinguished guests from the Kalibari community.
The celebration not only marked the beginning of the Bengali New Year but also reinforced the timeless message of cultural harmony, inclusivity, and shared heritage—values that continue to define India’s social fabric.
