Nitish Kumar distributes appointment letters to 21,391 constables and urges swift recruitment of remaining posts.

Patna, June 28, 2025: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday distributed appointment letters to newly appointed constables at a program held in Bapu Auditorium, Patna, reaffirming his government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s policing and law and order.

Nitish Kumar, addressing the gathering in the presence of top state officials including the Chief Secretary (Home), and DGP, publicly pressed officers to expedite the filling of remaining vacancies.

While addressing, he asked the officials, “Tell me, will you fill the vacant posts soon?”

Nitish Kumar explained police strength expansion:

Recalling the situation before he assumed office on November 24, 2005, Nitish Kumar highlighted the low number of police personnel during the previous regimes.

“There were only 42,481 policemen then. We decided to increase the strength to ensure better law and order,” he said.

Nitish underlined key reforms, including the 2013 policy reserving 35% of police jobs for women, increasing the police strength to 1.10 lakh.

The government has set a target to raise this further to 2.29 lakh personnel requiring 55,000 additional recruitments.

“There are officers here; we will ask them why they are not doing recruitment quickly. Stand up… does the recruitment quickly,” Kumar said.

Nitish Kumar added that Bihar has the highest number of women in the police force compared to any state in the country.

Unexpected moment on stage:

A brief moment of confusion occurred during the ceremony when Nitish Kumar while distributing letters alongside ministers, held senior minister Vijay Chaudhary’s hand and moved him aside. A smiling but surprised Chaudhary stepped back, and Energy Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav was brought forward to distribute the letters.

The large-scale recruitment drive and Nitish’s public push for faster hiring come ahead of upcoming by-elections and Lok Sabha preparations, signaling a focus on employment generation and law and order improvement in Bihar.
