Patna, August 12: The Bihar Government transferred 150.13 acres of land of Ekmi-Sobhan bypass to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the construction of AIIMS in Darbhanga on Monday evening.

Mangal Pandey, the health minister of the Bihar government confirmed the development. He said that the construction of AIIMS at the proposed site is expected to commence soon.

“The Bihar government has transferred the 150.13 acres of land of the proposed site at Ekmi-Shobhan bypass to the director of AIIMS. It is a significant step towards improving the health facilities in Bihar. The construction is anticipated to begin shortly and it will contribute to the state healthcare advancements,” Pandey said.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Nitish Kumar are continuously making efforts to improve the healthcare infrastructure in Bihar and this is one of them,” Pandey said.

Earlier on July 25, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved the construction of AIIMS in Darbhanga, as confirmed by a letter sent to Pratyay Amrit, the additional chief secretary of Bihar.

The Bihar government has fulfilled all the requirements set by the Union health ministry.

As per the letter, the technical team visited the Ekmi-Sobhan Bypass on March 18-19 this year submitted its report and said that the proposed site is suitable for the construction.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare asked the Health Department of Bihar government to transfer the required encumbrance-free land to the ministry and initiate necessary action for the provision of permanent electricity connection of 20 MVA from two alternate sources, four-lane road connectivity and potable water supply of 1.5 MLD required for the establishment of AIIMS Darbhanga.

At present, Bihar has one AIIMS in Patna and the people of the state have a longstanding demand for another AIIMS in North Bihar.

The Bihar government is also redeveloping the Darbhanga Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Work is underway on a plan to build a 2500-bed hospital for Rs 2742.04 crore. With the construction of both AIIMS Darbhanga and the revamped DMCH, Darbhanga is set to become a significant healthcare hub, benefiting not only North Bihar but also Nepal.
