Patna, May 26, 2024: Amid intense heatwave conditions across Bihar, there is finally some relief in sight as Cyclone Remal, formed over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall along the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday night.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Patna, has issued an alert for moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms in several districts of Bihar over the next 48 hours.

The Met department predicted rain due to the impact of the Remal cyclone:

Officials said that the impact of the cyclonic system will help bring down temperatures and provide much-needed respite from the ongoing heatwave.

Currently, the storm is passing through the central bay of Bengak. The IMD has recorded a maximum temperature of 44.6 degrees Celsius in Buxar, while temperatures in most districts are hovering between 42 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Under the influence of Cyclone Remal, rainfall has been forecast in Saharsa, Madhepura, Banka, Jamui, Khagaria, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, Purnea, Araria, Supaul, Katihar, Kishanganj, Bhagalpur, Munger, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Darbhanga, and Madhubani districts. Residents of these regions have been advised to remain alert.

According to IMD officials, light to moderate rainfall is likely in northeastern Bihar, while north Bihar may witness thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds.

Remal landfall expected on May 26 (Today):

“A deep depression has formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal, about 440km southeast of West Bengal. It intensified into a cyclone storm by Saturday evening and is expected to cross the West Bengal coast on May 26,” said a senior meteorologist from IMD Patna.

With the arrival of the storm, Bihar is expected to get temporary relief from the scorching summer temperatures that have gripped the state over the past week.
