Patna, March 6, 2026: Umesh Singh Kushwaha, MLA from Mahnar in Vaishali district, has been elected the Bihar State President of the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) for the third consecutive time.
Kushwaha filed his nomination for the post on Friday and was elected unopposed after no other candidate submitted nomination papers. The formal announcement of his election was made at 4 pm.
He submitted his nomination papers before state election officers Ashok Kumar ‘Munna’ and Paramhans Kumar.
Umesh Singh Kushwaha expressed gratitude to CM Nitish Kumar:
After being elected, Kushwaha expressed gratitude to the party leadership and workers.
“It is my great fortune that, with the blessings and guidance of the party’s universally accepted leader, National President, Chief Minister of the state, and our guardian, Nitish Kumar, I have been elected as the Bihar State President of the Janata Dal (U) for the third consecutive term,” Kushwaha said.
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to all the party officials and millions of workers across the state for the immense love, trust, and support they have shown me. This trust is a source of inspiration for me, and I pledge to fulfill it with complete loyalty, honesty, and dedication,” he added.

Kushwaha further said that under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, he would work to strengthen the organization further and ensure that the vision of “development with justice” reaches every section of society.
“I also express my heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to the party’s National Executive President, Sanjay Jha, and all the senior leaders. I am confident that I will continue to receive their love, trust, and guidance in the future as well. Under their leadership, the JDU will achieve new milestones of success in the coming days,” he said.
Umesh Singh Kushwaha is a key leader of JDU in consolidating the Lav-Kush equation:
Kushwaha has been leading the JDU organization in Bihar for the past five years and is considered one of the trusted leaders of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
He was first appointed state president in 2021, replacing Vashishtha Narain Singh, and his continued in the role since then.
The political base of the JDU largely revolves around the “Lav-Kush” social coalition, comprising the Kurmi and Koeri communities.

Kushwaha, who belongs to the Koeri community, is seen as strengthening the “Kush” side of this equation and maintaining the party’s grassroots support.
Despite the exit of prominent Koeri leader Upendra Kushwaha from the party, Umesh Singh Kushwaha remained loyal to Nitish Kumar, which further consolidated his position in the party.
Umesh Singh Kushwaha’s electoral journey:
Kushwaha won the Nahnar Assembly seat in 2015 and again in 2025, although he lost the election in 2020. Despite the setback, Nitish Kumar continued to entrust him with the responsibility of leading the party organization in Bihar.
