The second tiger reserve is coming up in Kaimur to boost wildlife tourism in Bihar.

Patna, July 29, 2025: Bihar’s forest minister Sunil Kumar announced that Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary is in the process of being upgraded to become the second tiger reserve in the state.

He said that a proposal had already been sent to the Government of India for approval.

“This will help manage the increasing tiger population and expand safe habitats in Bihar,” he added.

Minister Dr. Sunil Kumar, in his address, emphasized the importance of tiger conservation over Bihar’s achievements in recent years.

“In the past 12 years, Bihar’s tiger population has grown eightfold—a testament to the success of our conservation efforts,” he said.

Valmiki Tiger Reserve: Bihar’s Pride:

The event spotlighted the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR), located in West Champaran, as Bihar’s first and only current tiger reserve.

VTR is part of the Terai Arc Landscape, a crucial India. The reserve boasts over 54 tigers as of 2022 (up from 8 in 2010).

A 75% rise in population between 2018 and 2022. Rich biodiversity supported by dense forests and six rivers, including Gandak/ Narayani and Masan, VTR is a natural habitat for tigers.

The statement of Sunil Kumar comes on the occasion of the International Tiger Day event organized by the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bihar, at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park (Patna Zoo) on Tuesday.

The event highlighted Bihar’s growing role in tiger conservation and included student competitions, speeches from senior officials, and key announcements regarding future wildlife initiatives.

The event commenced with Minister Dr. Sunil Kumar, along with additional Chief Secretary Harjot Kaur Bamhra and other senior officials, inspecting the tiger enclosure of the zoo.

Following this, certificates were awarded to winners of the painting and quiz competitions held for school students, aimed at spreading awareness about tiger conservation.

Official remarks and conservation appeal:

Additional Chief Secretary Harjot Kaur Bamhra also addressed the gathering, urging citizens to refrain from encroachment on forest land and to respect the tiger’s space in the ecosystem.

“Let the tiger remain the king of the jungle,” she stated while advocating for coexistence and habitat protection.
