Patna, August 23: Tejashwi Yadav, the former deputy chief minister of Bihar, opposed the Wakf Amendment Bill 2024, and alleged the Narendra Modi government of attempting to undermine the country’s secular fabric and incite the religious tensions.

“We oppose this unconstitutional and unnecessary amendment bill proposed by the Narendra Modi government. It was brought with the aim of breaking the secular fabric of the country and spreading religious tensions,” Tejashwi Yadav said.

The statement of Tejashwi Yadav came after he met with a delegation of various Muslim organization in his residence in Patna on Friday.

“Our party has a longstanding commitment to minority rights. Our party and its national president Lalu Prasad Yadav have consistently been sensitive to the issue concerning minorities and are firmly against any government interference in religious matters,” he said.

The proposed amendments would negatively impact not only the religious, cultural and property rights of Muslims but also those of other religious communities,” Yadav said.

The former deputy chief minister reassured the deligation that he and his party stand with them in opposing the bill. He also criticized CM Nitish Kumar for supporting the proposed bill.

“We will not let it pass from Parliament at any cost and will fight this battle on all forums. It is unfortunate that Nitish Kumar is supporting this bill,” Tejashwi Yadav said.

The Wakf Amendment Bill was introduced in the parliament during the budget session and made several changes.
