Patna, May 10, 2025: In a joint operation, the Surat police and Bihar police on Friday morning arrested a man for allegedly threatening former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and social activist Updesh Rana.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Shahnawaz Ali, a native of Muzaffarpur district, who has been residing in Nepal for the past 23 years.
Surat and Bihar police arrested Ali from Muzaffarpur:
He was apprehended from his maternal grandmother’s house located in Chakbadullah Paharpur village under the Sakra police station area of Muzaffarpur.
The Station House Officer (SHO) of Sakra police station confirmed the arrest, stating that a joint team from Surat and Muzaffarpur police conducted a raid at around 4 a.m. and detained Ali.
According to the officer, Ali had issued threats to Nupur Sharma and Updesh Rana through phone calls and WhatsApp messages.
A conspiracy was allegedly hatched by a Surat-based cleric:
Police sources said the operation followed the recent arrest of Maulana Sohel Abubakr Timol, a cleric from Surat, who allegedly conspired to target the two public figures.
During interrogation, Maulana Timol reportedly disclosed Ali’s involvement in the case.
Investigators said Ali had been in contact with Timol for a long time and had also made WhatsApp calls to individuals in Pakistan.
His mobile phone has been seized for forensic examination, and police expect further information to emerge from its analysis.
Ali was produced before a district court on Friday and was placed on transit remand to Surat for further investigation.
