New Delhi, June 9, 2024: A gritty half-century from David Miller (59 off 51 balls) pulled South Africa out of deep trouble and guided them to a hard-fought win over the Netherlands in their ICC T20 World Cup D match at the Nassau County Stadium on Saturday evening.
South Africa eventually won the contest after an initial collapse:
Chasing a modest target of 104, South Africa suffered a dramatic collapse early in the innings, slumping to 12 for 4. However, Miller, in partnership with Tristan Stubbs, steadied the innings with a crucial stand that eventually took the Proteas over the line.
Earlier, South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Ottneil Baartman, who claimed 4 wickets, restricted the Netherlands to 103/9 in 20 overs after winning the toss and opting to bowl first.
Reflecting on the tense contest, South Africa captain Aiden Markram said the team was aware of the challenge posed by the Dutch side.
Netherlandish bowlers performed on the field very well:
“We knew they were always going to be up for a scrap. The history before this game was obviously that they beat us. It’s a mental blockade. If you look at 12 for 4, to squeeze the win out of there is good for the team environment,” Markram said.
He also credited the Netherlands bowlers for making South Africa’s chase difficult.
“The wicket played better than in the first game. Credit to the Netherlands bowlers—they bowled really well. You need to be able to play the game. They made it difficult for us to score,” he added.
