Patna, September 23, 2024: Shyam Rajak, the prominent Dalit leader of Bihar was appointed as the national General Secretary of Janata Dal (United) on Monday.

An official announcement was made through a letter issued from the office of Afaq Ahmed Khan, the JD(U) general secretary and MLC of the party, confirming Rajak’s appointment. Such a decision was taken on the direction of Bihar’s Chief Minister and National President of JD (U) Nitish Kumar.

Shyam Rajak, rejoined Janata Dal (United) on September 1, 2024, marking his second stint with the party. Since his return, Shyam Rajak has been actively involved in a “Panchayat Yatra,” has been traveling across Bihar, engaging with the local communities especially Dalit and Mahadalit people and discussing the development work carried out by the Nitish Kumar government.

Shyam Rajak has a strong political presence, particularly in the Phulwarisharif assembly constituency in Patna, where he has previously won several elections.

His current efforts and visibility have fuelled speculation that he is aiming for a JD(U) ticket from Phulwarisharif to contest the assembly election in 2025.

The political journey of Shyam Rajak was marked by significant shifts between RJD and JD(U). He began his political journey with RJD but switched to JD(U) and became the cabinet minister. Ahead of the assembly election 2020, he re-joined RJD, hoping to contest from his stronghold in Phulwarisharif.

However, his ambitions were thwarted when, as part of the Grand Alliance’s seat-sharing formula, the seat of Phulwarisharif was allocated to the CPI-ML leader Gopal Ravidas. Rajak was expecting the ticket of the Lok Sabha election 2024 but he was denied by the RJD’s leadership.
Frustrated with the treatment of RJD leaders, he resigned from the party on August 22, 2024. He was holding the post of RJD’s national general secretary.
