Patna, August 8: Sheela Mandal, the transport minister of the Bihar government has increased the reward up to Rs 10000 for those who assist the road accident victims in getting to the hospital.

Bihar is a state where the fatalities due to road accidents increased in the recent past. Increase in reward amount aiming to encourage more people to take swift action in rescuing and helping save lives.

This decision comes as a part of broader efforts by the Nitish Kumar government to address the concerning trend of increasing road accidents in the state. The Nitish Kumar government had passed a proposal in the cabinet meeting held on August 6 where it had authorization for the Transport Department to form a committee to set maximum speed limits on various National Highways, State Highways, roads under the Road Construction Department, and roads of the Rural Works Department to reduce accidents due to high-speed vehicles.

“The first one-hour which is also known as a golden hour is important for the injured persons to save lives. That is why we started rewarding the people who help the injured persons. Earlier we were giving Rs 5000 but now it has been increased to Rs 10000. A large number of people have shown response to our initiative,” Sheela Mandal said.

Sheela Mandal said that the initiative of Bihar has also been adopted by the Central Government. There too, Rs 5000 is being given to the people who help the injured.

“The fear of legal hassles previously deterred many from helping accident victims, but the government’s efforts have reduced these concerns, leading to increased participation in rescue efforts,” She said.

This initiative underscores the idea that helping accident victims is not just a civic duty but a humanitarian act that could save anyone’s life,” Sheela Mandal said.

To facilitate the reward process, the police send a report to the transport department about the person who brought the injured person to the hospital in time. Once the police investigation confirms the details, the reward money is disbursed through the District Magistrate along with the certificate of appreciation.
