Patna, December 19, 2025: The winter cold in Bihar has intensified sharply, creating serious difficulties for daily life across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a dense to very dense fog and cold wave alert for nearly 27 districts, warning that the situation may worsen over the next few days.
IMD predicted severe cold after December 22:
According to the IMD, the fog alert will remain in effect from December 19 to December 22, with North and West Bihar expected to bear the brunt of severe weather conditions.
Dense to very dense fog is likely during the night and early morning hours, significantly affecting visibility.
Districts including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Darbhanga, Vaishali, Gaya and Bhagalpur are expected to experience extremely low visibility.
In several areas, visibility may drop to as low as 50 meters, posing risks to road, rail, and air traffic.
In the state capital Patna, maximum temperatures are being recorded below normal, while a rise in minimum temperatures has resulted in persistent cold conditions throughout the day.
Thick fog has obscured sunlight, adding to the chill and reducing daylight warmth.
Dense fog is currently prevailing over more than half of Bihar.
In districts such as Gaya and Bhagalpur, minimum temperatures have fallen below 10 degrees Celsius, intensifying the cold wave conditions.
Meteorologists attribute the dense fog to westerly winds, high surface moisture, and low wind speed.
The IMD has warned that these conditions are likely to persist for the next few days, particularly affecting morning traffic movement.
In response, district administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert.
Preparations are underway to arrange bonfires and other relief measures in vulnerable areas.
Officials have indicated that the cold is expected to be more severe this year compared to last winter.
Weather experts predict that cold conditions will continue in Bihar for the next seven days.
While fog will dominate during morning and evening, brief spells of light sunshine may occur during the daytime.
The public is advised to take precautions:
No major temperature fluctuations are expected, but the cold may gradually intensify.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions, especially during morning and late-night hours.
