Sangam Kumar Sahoo appointed as 47th Chief Justice of Patna High Court.

Patna, January 7, 2026: Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo on Wednesday took oath as the 47th Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan administered the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Patna, officials said.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, members of the state cabinet, judges of the Patna High Court, and several other dignitaries.

The Central government had issued a notification on January 1 appointing Justice Sahoo as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

His appointment process began last month when the Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting held on December 18, 2025, recommended his name to the Centre.

Following the approval of the president of India, the Union Minister of Law and Justice issued the official notification. Until his appointment, Justice Sudhir Singh had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Sangam Kumar Sahoo is a native of Odisha:

Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo has had a distinguished legal career spanning over three decades.

Born in 1964, he completed his matriculation from Nayabazar High School, Cuttack, and earned a B.SC. degree from Stewart Science College.

He later obtained M. A. degrees in English and Odia from Utkal University.

Justice Sahoo was introduced to the legal profession under the guidance of his father, the late Sarat Chandra Sahu, a renowned criminal law expert. After enrolling as an advocate with the Odisha State Bar Council on November 26, 1989, he practiced law and also worked with Dr. Manoranjan Panda.

Known for his expertise in criminal law, Justice Sahoo was appointed as a Judge of Odisha High Court on July 2, 2014, based on merit.

His elevation as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court is being viewed as a significant development in the state’s judicial administration.
