Patna, January 2, 2026: The year 2026 began in Bihar under the grip of severe cold and dense fog, disrupting normal life across the state.
Thick fog blanketed large parts of Bihar on the morning of January 2, sharply reducing visibility and affecting road and rail movement.
Chilly weather conditions prevailed in several districts of North Bihar, while parts of South Bihar were expected to get marginal relief during the day.
IMD issued an orange alert for cold weather in 19 districts:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for dense fog and Chilly weather conditions in 19 districts of North Bihar, including Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnea, Gopalganj, Siwan, and West Champaran.
Strong and chilly winds in these areas intensified the cold, making conditions harsh even during daytime hours.
Meanwhile, South Bihar districts such as Patna, Gaya, Jamui, Buxar, and Arwal were expected to witness partial sunshine, offering some respite on January 1.
According to the IMD, temperatures in these areas could rise by 1.2 degrees Celsius during the day.
However, dense fog continued to affect these districts as well, prompting the issuance of a yellow alert.
Cold wave likely to ease after January 7:
As per the IMD’s weekly forecast, the cold wave and fog conditions are expected to gradually weaken in the coming days.
By January 7, both day and night temperatures across most districts may rise by up to 3 degrees Celsius.
While dense fog could still persist in parts of North Bihar, no cold day of fog warnings have been issued for districts such as Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Munger.
The night of December 31, 2025, turned out to be the coldest night of the season in Bihar.
