Patna, December 1, 2025: An important chapter was added to Bihar politics on Monday as senior BJP leader and Gaya Sadar MLA Dr. Prem Kumar filed his nomination for the post of Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The nomination process took place in the chamber of the Assembly secretary, where the unity of the ruling alliance was clearly visible.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with several senior NDA ministers and MLAs, were present during the nomination, reflecting strong support for Dr. Prem Kumar’s candidature.

Dr Kumar is one of the most experienced and prominent leaders of the Bihar BJP.

Prem Kumar was elected for the ninth time as MLA:

He has won the Gaya Sadar seat for the 9th consecutive time, and the NDA has placed its confidence in him, considering his seniority, long legislative experience, and deep understanding of parliamentary procedures.

Speaking to the media, Dr Kumar said, “I have filed my nomination today for the post of Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the result of which will be announced tomorrow. We welcome the decision of our leaders and express gratitude to the party leadership.”

He further added, “I have won the Assembly elections for the ninth consecutive time, and I thank the people of my constituency and my party leaders for their trust.”

Prem Kumar stayed in various posts in the past:

Throughout his political career, Dr. Kumar has held several important portfolios in the Bihar government, including Agriculture, PHED, and Urban Development.

He has also served as the leader of the opposition.

Known for his calm and composed nature, he is regarded as a senior and dignified politician, qualities that may contribute to the smooth functioning of the House if he is elected Speaker.

After scrutiny of the nomination paper, the name of the new Speaker will be formally announced in a special session of the Assembly on Tuesday (Tomorrow).

There is also speculation that, in order to uphold tradition, the opposition may choose to support the nomination rather than contest the post.
