Political clash over Waqf Law: Owaisi warns of social instability, Bihar minister hits back.

Patna February 5, 2025: A political storm has erupted over the proposed amendments to the Waqf law, with AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi warning the Narendra Modi government that its current form could lead to social instability in the country.

In response, Bihar’s Labour Resources  Minister Santosh Singh strongly  criticized Owaisi, accusing him of trying to create a “Pakistan-like situation’ in India Owaisi’s warning in Lok Sabha on Waqf law:

During a heated debate in Parliament, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi stated: I am cautioning and warning this government. If the Narendra Modi government brings and makes a Waqf law in its present form, which will be a violation of Articles 25, 26, and 14, it will lead to social instability in this country.”

He further claimed that the entire Muslim community has rejected the proposed law, arguing that it would result in the loss of Waqf properties across the country.

Bihar minister Santosh Singh strong response on Waqf law:

Hitting back at Owaisi, Bihar Labour Resources Minister Santosh Singh stated: “Some countries run by saying that they will follow Sharia, but this country runs on democracy, which was created by Baba Saheb Ambedkar.”

He emphasized that Ambedkar’s vision of democracy ensures that wrongfully occupied properties should be returned to their rightful owners.

Singh linked this to the stance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, asserting that: “Owaisi wants to create Pakistan in India, but as long as Narendra Modi is in power, this will not happen.”

The controversy comes at a time when debates over religious and community-based laws are intensifying, especially with the 2024 Lok Sabha election approaching.

Political confrontation over Waqf law:

The AIMIM leader has consistently opposed any change to the Waqf law that he believes will weaken Muslim institutions.

The ruling party argues that land disputes involving Waqf properties must be resolved fairly and transparently to prevent illegal encroachments.

With rising tensions around the issue, the Modi government’s final draft of the Waqf law will be closely scrutinized.

Meanwhile, Owaisi and opposition parties may use this issue to mobilize minority support, while the BJP will frame it as a step towards legal and land reforms.
