New Delhi, January 22, 2026: A major milestone has been achieved under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-IV (PMGSY-IV) with the sanctioning of over 10,000 kilometers of rural road projects for the states and Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
The move further strengthens the Department of Rural Development’s commitment towards building a Developed India through improved rural connectivity.
These road projects, connecting remote hilly regions and rural interiors, are expected to act as critical enablers of inclusive development.
Beyond infrastructure, the sanctioned roads are being seen as “pathways to progress,” opening access to essential services and new opportunities for local communities.
Connectivity for 3,270 habitations under PMGSY-IV:
According to official estimates, the construction of these roads will provide connectivity to around 3,270 previously unconnected habitations, significantly improving access to healthcare, education, markets, and livelihood opportunities.
The initiative is expected to bring transformational changes in rural life by reducing isolation and strengthening the development foundation in underserved areas.
Under PMGSY-IV, the objective is to provide connectivity to 25,000 unconnected habitations as per the 2011 census, with population criteria including over 500 in plan areas, over 250 in North-Eastern and Himalayan states/UTs, over 100 in special category areas such as schedule V tribal regions, aspirational districts/blocks, desert areas, and Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected districts.

The scheme aims to construct 62,500 kilometers of all-weather roads to connect these habitations.
In addition to roads, the project also includes the construction of necessary bridges to ensure year-round connectivity.
Cabinet approval and funding:
The Union cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the implementation of PMGSY-IV for the period 2024-25 to 2028-29 on September 11, 2024.
The total outlay for the scheme is Rs 70,125 crore, including the Central Government share—Rs 49,087.50 crore and the State Government share—Rs 21,037.50 crore.
With the latest sanctions, PMGSY-IV continues to play a crucial role in improving rural infrastructure, reducing regional disparities, and strengthening connectivity as a key driver for long-term national growth.
