PM Narendra Modi launches Rs 18,700 crore development projects in Kolkata.

New Delhi, March 14, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 18,700 crore in Kolkata, West Bengal.

The projects cover road, Railway, and port infrastructure, aimed at boosting connectivity and economic development across eastern India.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that a new chapter of development is being written for West Bengal and the eastern region.

Narendra Modi launched a major infrastructure push:

Modi said the newly launched projects would accelerate economic activity, improve connectivity, and create new opportunities for people in the region.

Key projects highlighted include Khargarpur—Moregram Expressway, expected to boost economic activities across several districts of West Bengal.

Dubrajpur Bypass is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving road connectivity.

Construction of major bridges over the Kangasabati River and Shilabati River to strengthen regional transport networks.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people of West Bengal and eastern India, stating that these projects would bring transformational change in infrastructure and trade.

Railway modernization initiatives:

Highlighting the government’s efforts to modernize Indian Railways, Modi said the Centre is rapidly expanding railway infrastructure in West Bengal to ensure the state remains part of the national development push.

Among the key railway initiatives dedication of the automatic block signaling system on the Kalaikunda—Kanimahuli railway section, which will improve safety and increase the capacity of busy rail routes.

Inauguration of six stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: Kamakhyaguri Railway Station, Anara Railway Station. Tamluk Railway Station, Haldia Railway Station, Barabhum Railway Station, and Siuri Railway Station.

Flagging off a new express train between Purulia and Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi.

The Prime Minister said the train service would benefit passengers from West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

Narendra Modi also emphasized the importance of waterways and ports for economic growth.

 He said eastern India’s maritime potential had long been underutilized but is now being developed.

Major port-related initiatives include the mechanization of the Haldia Dock Complex to increase cargo-handling efficiency.

Renovation of the Bascule Bridge in the Kolkata Dock System. Expansion of cargo-handling capacity at Kidderpore Dock.

According to the Prime Minister, these initiatives will significantly strengthen the logistics network and trade infrastructure in eastern India.

Vision for a Viksit Bengal:

In his concluding remarks, Modi said the new infrastructure projects will benefit farmers, traders, entrepreneurs, students, and local industries, while also boosting tourism and employment.

Recalling Bengal’s historic role in shaping India’s progress, he expressed confidence that improved connectivity and modern infrastructure will help the state regain its leadership role in national development.

“It is our resolve that Bengal, which has always shown the way to India, should once again achieve that glory by becoming a Viksit Bengal,” the Prime Minister said.
