PM Narendra Modi launches major National Highway Projects in West Bengal.

New Delhi, March 14, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several National Highway projects in West Bengal aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time, and strengthening economic growth across eastern India.

These infrastructure projects are expected to ease traffic flow, boost logistics efficiency, and strengthen trade, industry, and tourism across the state.

Narendra Modi highlighted features of the Kharagpur—Moregram economic corridor:

A key initiative is the development of multiple packages of the Kharagpur—Moregram Economic Corridor on National Highway 116A, covering a total length of 230.9 km.

The corridor will improve connectivity across six districts: Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur, Bankura, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, and Murshidabad.

The project will connect Kharagpur with Moregram. Once completed, it is expected to reduce travel distance by about 119 km and cut travel time by nearly 7—8 hours, while improving both passenger and freight movement.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 6-laning of the 114.7-km-long Barwa Adda—Panagarh section of National Highway 19, extending up to the Panagarh Bypass across Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Strengthens connectivity between the industrial regions of Jharkhand and West Bengal, the corridor will improve links between Bokaro, Dhanbad, Asansol, Durgapur, and Kolkata.

It will enhance freight movement and logistics efficiency, integrates with key routes including National Highways 18, National Highway 419, and National Highway 14.

Panagarh—Palsit six-lane projects:

Another major project inaugurated was the 6-laning of the 67.7-km Panagarh—Palsit section of NH-19.

This project strengthens the Delhi—Kolkata highway corridor, enhances connectivity between Kolkata and industrial hubs such as Durgapur, Asansol, and Dhanbad, boosts trade, agriculture, tourism, and industrial activity in Purba Bardhaman and surrounding districts.

The upgraded highway also improves road safety with 42 underpasses and improved junction design.

Other infrastructure works launched during the event include the construction of a Railway Over Bridge between Bhedia and Bolpur on National Highway 114, two four-lane bridges over the Kangsabati River and Shilabati River on NH-14 in Paschim Medinipur.

These bridges will improve connectivity with the Bankura district and reduce travel time by about 30 minutes.

According to the Prime Minister, the new road infrastructure will strengthen the Delhi—Kolkata corridor, improve logistics efficiency, and create new opportunities for trade, agriculture, tourism, and industrial development across eastern India.
