New Delhi, February 28, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described the commencement of commercial production at Micron’s ATMP facility in Sanand as a historic milestone for India’s technology journey.

The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, apart from Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghvi and other dignitaries.

PM Narendra Modi noted that just a decade ago, discussions around semiconductors and chip manufacturing in India were limited.

India was once known primarily for software and IT services. Today, India is strengthening its presence in the hardware sector as well. In Sanand, we are witnessing the emergence of a new future.”

The start of commercial production at Micron’s Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand is expected to significantly strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor value chain.

PM Narendra Modi highlighted the rapid execution of technologies:

Highlighting the project timeline, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the MoU signed in June 2023, a groundbreaking ceremony in September 2023, the installation of machines in February 2024, and the commercial production launched in February 2026.

“When the intention is clear, and the commitment is towards rapid development, policy becomes clear, and decisions are expedited.”

The Prime Minister described the Micron facility as a symbol of the strong and growing partnership between India and the United States.

He underlined the importance of cooperation in AI semiconductor technologies, calling them crucial to securing global supply chains. Referring to the “Pax Silica” understanding reached during the recent AI Summit, he said joint efforts would help make critical mineral and semiconductor supply chains more resilient and reliable.

Semiconductors: The Bridge to the AI Century:

Drawing a historical comparison, the Prime Minister said, “The 20th century was defined by the Industrial Revolution and the 21st century is being shaped by the AI Revolution.”

“If oil was the regulator of the last century, the microchip will be the regulator of this century,” he said.

Pan-India semiconductor ecosystem:

Under the Semicon India program, 10 projects have been approved so far. Apart from Micron, three additional projects are expected to begin production soon.

The semiconductor ecosystem is being developed across multiple regions, including Dholera, Noida, Assam, Odisha and Punjab.

This pan-India approach aims to create new technology hubs and accelerate progress toward a developed India.

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister delivered a clear message to global investors: “India is ready. India is reliable. And India delivers.”

The launch of commercial production at Micron’s Sanand facility marks a significant step in India’s ambition to emerge as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.

He emphasized that such speed is remarkable even by global standards, noting that complex agreements in developed nations often take years to conclude.
