Patna, June 14, 2024: Patna Police resorted to a mild lathi-charge on Monday afternoon to disperse thousands of guest teachers who had staged a protest on Bailey Road demanding reinstatement in the Education Department.
The protesting teachers had gathered near Patna Zoo and were reportedly attempting to move towards the Raj Bhawan and the Chief Minister’s residence.
Patna Police initiated a lathi charge without any prior notice:
“They were protesting near Patna Zoo on Bailey Road, which is not permitted. The administration first warned them to vacate the area. When they did not move, a mild lathi-charge was used. No serious injury has been reported,” said duty magistrate Y. H. Khan.
However, the protesters alleged they were targeted without warning.
“We were protesting on Bailey Road when the police suddenly arrived and initiated a lathi-charge without any prior notice. Most of us have been serving in the Education Department for 15-20 years. Now our age is around 50—how will we get another job at this age?” said protester Shanti Lal Singh.
Around 4,200 guest teachers have lost their jobs:
The Bihar government has discontinued guest teachers and appointed new teachers selected through the BPSC recruitment process. Orders to remove guest teachers were issued recently by district magistrates across the state.
Around 4,200 guest teachers—mainly deployed in class 10+2 schools—have lost their jobs following protests demanding reinstatement for the last several weeks.
