Patna, September 12, 2025: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Patna, under the Ministry of Textiles, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL) to provide rural women with industry-relevant skills and direct access to employment opportunities in Bihar’s textile sector.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Singh said, “NIFT Patna has already conducted successful training programs for Jivika Didis in Begusarai, which have improved their stitching skills and income. With this MoU, Jivika Didis, trained at NIFT’s Extension Centre, will now have direct access to formal industry jobs at ABFRL’s factory. Initially, 3.5 lakh women in the immediate region will benefit, with plans to expand to adjoining districts in the future.”
Empowering Jivika Didis through NIFT and the Union Textile Ministry:
The initiative focuses on training women from self-help groups (SHGs), popularly known as Jivika Didis, in garment manufacturing techniques, quality control, and machinery operation.
The training will prepare them for employment at ABFRL’s upcoming textile unit in Begusarai, creating a structured pathway from skill development to formal jobs.
The Jivika program implemented by the Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society (BRLPS) with support from the Government of India and the World Bank has mobilized more than 1.4 crore rural women into SHGs.

This MoU between NIFT Patna and ABFRL marks a milestone by linking these women directly to industry opportunities, taking their role beyond micro-enterprises to the mainstream industrial economy.
Academia—Industry synergy:
As one of India’s leading fashion and retail companies, ABFRL brings industry demand to the table, while NIFT contributes academic expertise.
This synergy is designed to ensure that the skill imparted meets modern textile industry standards.
The model is also expected to serve as a blueprint for similar collaborations in other states where SHGs and women’s collectives play a critical role in rural livelihood.
Social and economic impact:
The program aims not only to create jobs but also to deliver long-term socio-economic benefits.
By providing women with secure livelihoods, it will enhance financial independence, household decision-making, and social dignity.
At the same time, ABFRL’s investment in Begusarai will stimulate industrial growth and generate opportunities for the wider local workforce.
A landmark initiative of NIFT and ABFRL:
The MoU between NIFT Patna and ABFRL represents a unique partnership of government vision, academic expertise, and industrial leadership.
Aligning skill development with assured employment offers a scalable and replicable model for inclusive growth across India.
