New Delhi, February 9, 2026: As part of its ongoing efforts to conserve biodiversity and ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of biological resources, the NBA (National Biodiversity Authority) has disbursed Rs 45.05 lakh to benefit claimers through State Biodiversity Boards and Union Territory Biodiversity Councils.

The benefit-sharing payments will support over 90 Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) spread across 10 states and two Union Territories, including Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The NBA also supported sander farmers:

In addition, 15 Red Sanders Farmers from Andhra Pradesh have also received benefit-sharing funds.

The beneficiary BMCs represent a wide range of ecological and institutional settings, including rural villages, urban local bodies, mangrove ecosystems and industrial areas, reflecting the diverse landscapes where biological resources are conserved and managed.

The benefit-sharing amount was generated from the commercial use of various biological resources, including insects, microorganisms found in soil and water, and cultivated Red Sanders.

These resources have contributed to the development of multiple products, highlighting the role of biodiversity in driving scientific innovation and the bio-economy.

Under the Access and Benefit-sharing mechanism, a portion of the commercial benefits earned by companies is returned to local communities.

This process helps improve livelihoods while encouraging communities to actively protect and conserve biodiversity.

In recent years, the NBA has introduced simplified regulations to enhance transparency and promote ease of doing business, while ensuring that community rights and biodiversity interests remain protected.

The NBA works with government and private players:

The Authority works closely with state governments, local bodies, researchers, industry stakeholders and communities to build awareness and capacity for sustainable biodiversity management.

The NBA also supports the preparation of People’s Biodiversity Registers documenting traditional knowledge and promoting community participation in biodiversity conservation at the grassroots level.

Collectively, these initiatives have resulted in cumulative ABS payments exceeding Rs 145 crore.

The NBA continues to play a crucial role in fulfilling India’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Nagoya Protocol on ABS, and in advancing the goals of the National Biodiversity Targets and Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
