Patna, July 24, 2025: A day after JDU MP from Banka, Girdhari Yadav, criticized the Election  Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, stating that the EC lacks knowledge of Bihar’s history and geography, the Janata dal (United) issued him a show cause notice for going beyond the party line.

The notice, issued by the office of JDU National General Secretary and MLC Afaque Ahmed Khan on Thursday, cited Yadav’s statements made within Parliament premises.

It emphasized that under Article 324 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the ECI has the authority to conduct SIR in Bihar.

JDU said Giradhari Yadav’s comment has embarrassed the party:

The notice reminded Yadav that opposition parties, “frustrated by electoral outcomes,” have been attempting to discredit the Election Commission and EVMs to create public doubt, while JDU has consistently supported the ECI and EVMs, both during its time in the I.JN.D.I.A. alliance and now within the NDA.

The party stated that Girdhari Yadav’s commitment on this sensitive matter during an election year embarrasses the party and “lends credibility to baseless, politically motivated allegations” made by the opposition.

Terming his conduct as a lapse in discipline, JDU has asked Girdhari Yadav to submit his explanation within 15 days, failing which disciplinary action may be taken.

Girdhari Yadav alleged ECI has no practical knowledge of Bihar:

Girdhari Yadav, a four-time MP from Banka, on Wednesday, has termed the Election Commission’s decision on the SIR as a ‘Tughlaqi decree’.

“The Election Commission does not have practical knowledge of Bihar’s history and geography. It should not have conducted this process during the rainy and farming season. It took us ten days to collect the papers. My son is in America, How will he sign within a month? If this were to be done, it should have been started six months ago,” Girdhari Yadav said.

While clarifying that the party supports the SIR, Yadav said he was expressing personal views as an MP.

We will vote with the party, but I also have my own views. If you think this is against the party, so be it, but this is the truth. If we cannot speak the truth, why are we MPs?” he said.
