More than 90 people lost their lives in the heat waves in the last three days in Bihar.

Patna, May 31, 2024: The scorching heat waves across Bihar has claimed more than 90 lives in the last three days, with Aurangabad emerging as the worst-affected district, where temperatures soared to 48.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

Heat waves are turning out fatal in Bihar:

Officials have so far confirmed 27 deaths due to heat waves, though the actual toll is feared to be much higher.

In several cases, postmortem examinations have not been conducted as families refused to allow them.

In Aurangabad alone, 19 people have reportedly died, with 12 deaths officially confirmed. More than 200 people were treated for heat waves illnesses at the Sadar Hospital on Thursday, leading to overcrowding and chaos.

“About 200 patients came with symptoms of heat waves on Thursday. All were treated,” said Dr. Abhishek Kumar, Medical Officer at Sadar Hospital.

According to a senior Health Department official, over 300 patients suffering from heatstroke have been admitted to hospitals across the state. The department has urged people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Disaster Management Department reported eight deaths in Arwal, Buxar, Rohtas, and Begusarai districts, though postmortem reports are awaited. “We cannot ascertain the exact cause of death until the reports arrive,” said an official.

In Patna, a sector officer identified as Dukhharan Prasad, an agriculture coordinator from Dhanarua, died during treatment at PMCH after collapsing on duty.

People are facing an intense heat wave across the state:

Two passengers also died at Nadoul railway station on the Patna-Gaya line on Friday morning due to suspected heatstroke.

Bhojpur’s Arrah city reported nine deaths, including five polling personnel, while the local administration confirmed three. A CPI-ML state committee member was also among the deceased.

The heat wave has claimed eight lives each in Rohtas and Jahanabad, including a soldier on election duty. Six people died in Kaimur, among them a teacher who collapsed while returning from election duty.

In Gaya, three people have died in the past two days, including an 80-year-old man and a 50-year-old farmer.

In Nalanda, the body of a police personnel from Siwan and two unidentified persons were found, including a 70-year-old woman discovered inside a train at Rajgir station.

Deaths have also been reported from Buxar (3), Chapra (3), Sheikhpura (2), Munger (2), Gopalganj, Jamui, Lakhisarai, and East Champaran districts.

 With temperatures continuing to rise, health authorities have placed hospitals on alert and advised residents to remain hydrated and indoors during peak hours.
