Patna, August 7, 2025: In historic and spiritually significant event, the foundation stone of the grand Mata Janaki Temple will be laid on Friday in Punauradham, the revered birthplace of Mata Sita, located in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will perform the Bhoomi Pujan, marking the beginning of a monumental project that echoes the grandeur of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
The temple, planned over 67 acres, will house a 151-foot tall sanctum and is expected to be completed by 2028.
The event and project aim to not only strengthen religious faith but also boost tourism and cultural identity in the Mithila region.
Sacred and symbolic foundation ceremony of Mata Janaki temple:
The foundation-lying ceremony of Mata Janaki temple will be marked by an extraordinary spiritual aura with silver urns from Jaipur, soil from 21 major pilgrimage sites, and water from 31 holy rivers, including the Ganga, Yamuna, and Godavari, will be used to sanctify the event.
In a gesture inspired by the Balaji Temple of Tirupati, over 50,000 packets of special laddus are being prepared by expert South Indian artisans.

These laddus will undergo a Sankalp bath in the waters of 11 holy rivers, adding divine significance to the ceremony.
Features of the grand Mata Janaki temple Complex:
The Mata Janaki temple will not just be a religious structure, but a spiritual-cum-cultural complex designed with a blend of heritage and modern facilities.
As per the planned features, it will have Yagya Mandap, Sita Vatika & Lavkush Vatika, Bhajan Sandhya Sthal (Devotional Music Hall), auditorium and museum, children’s play area, cafeteria and Mithila Haat (Cultural Market), Dharamshala, Yatri guest house & dormitory, E-cart station, parking, and road exhibition area.
To add a learning and cultural dimension, historical stories and legends related to Mata Sita will be depicted within the complex.
The nearby Mata Janki Kund will also undergo beautification as part of the project.
Dignitaries and participation:
The Bhoomi Pujan will see the presence of prominent leaders of the union and state ministers, saints, seers and thousands of devotees from across the country.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 882.87 crore.
The Bihar Tourism Department has been entrusted with overseeing preparations and development, ensuring top-notch infrastructure for devotees and tourists.
The Mata Janaki temple is poised to become a major spiritual destination and s beacon of Mithila’s rich heritage.
It is expected to bring global recognition to the cultural and religious significance of Punauradham, elevating the region’s status in both faith tourism and historical relevance.
