Patna, April 20, 2024: The Katihar rail police on Saturday seized Rs 52.48 lakh in cash from an AC coach of the Awadh Assam Express during an election-related checking drive.

Katihar rail SP confirmed the seizures:

Dr. Sanjay Bharti, Superintendent of Katihar Rail Police, confirmed the recovery, stating that the cash was found in two leather bags placed at berth number 44 of AC coach A/2. The bags were linked to Anil Kumar, a resident of Kanth village under Teghra police station in Madhubani district, who was detained on the spot.

“Since the matter involves a large amount of cash, we informed the Income Tax Department. Their officers questioned the person, but he could not provide satisfactory answers or valid documents to justify possession of the money,” Dr. Bharti said.

Income Tax officials also joined the probe:

Income Tax officials Hareram Prasad and Prasun Kumar Jha joined the interrogation, but Anil Kumar allegedly failed to explain the source of the cash.

With the Lok Sabha elections 2024 underway, authorities have intensified security checks in trains and stations across Bihar. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC, and further investigation is ongoing.

Along with the cash, the police also recovered a Vivo mobile phone, an election voter ID card, and a Xerox copy of an Aadhaar card from Anil Kumar’s possession.
