Janata Dal (United) leader demanded Bharat Ratna for Nitish Kumar.

Patna October 5, 2024: A Janata Dal (United) leader Chotu Singh came up with the poster and publicly called for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.

Posters advocating for this honour were installed at several locations including the JD(U) office, featuring photographs of Nitish Kumar, other party leaders and himself with the caption: “The renowned socialist development man of Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should be awarded the Bharat Ratna.”

This move reflects the Janata Dal (United)’s long-standing narrative of projecting Nitish Kumar as the Development Man” of Bihar.

The party frequently highlights his achievements since taking office in 2005.

Over his tenure, barring a brief period in 2014 when he handed over the Chief Minister’s post to Jitan Ram Manjhi, Kumar has led a range of significant reforms and projects like a policy ensuring 50% reservation for women in Bihar Panchayati Raj, empowering women at the grassroots level.

His decision to impose a state-wide liquor ban was a major political move, widely welcomed by women, though it has also generated criticism and challenges related to enforcement.

The Seven Point Program (Saat Nishchay Yojana), is an ambitious development program focused on improving infrastructure, youth skill development, employment, and basic amenities like electricity, clean water and sanitation.

Road Infrastructure projects in Bihar are also an achievement of Bihar where the leaders of Janata Dal (United) often give credit for improving the state road network, boosting connectivity and economic growth.

Under his governance, Bihar saw a marked improvement in law and order, with crime rates reportedly dropping, a point the Janata Dal (United) often underscores as a key achievement.

In addition to his tenure as Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar also served in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government as the Union Minister for Railway and Agriculture.
