Patna September 19: Jan Suraj chief, Prashant Kishor, has supported the “One Nation One Election” concept brought by the Narendra Modi government on Thursday.

While giving his reaction, the Jan Suraj chief emphasized that if it is implemented with the right intent, the idea would be highly beneficial for the country.

Drawing on his extensive experience in electoral politics, the Jan Suraj chief, said, “Around one-fourth of the country’s population votes every year due to frequent elections across various states. Because of the continuous election cycle, the people running the government prevent focusing fully on the governance, as they are always in election mode,” he said.

“By consolidating elections to occur once or twice in a term, the governments not only have more time to focus on governance but also time and resources—both for the government and the public—would be saved,” the Jan Suraj chief said.

“The One Nation One Election concept adds to the broader conversion on electoral reforms, where the aim is to streamline elections across the country for greater efficiency and governance stability,” he said.

Prashant Kishor further advised caution regarding its implementation.

“The electoral process that has been in place for the last 50 years cannot be changed overnight. The government should allow 4-5 years to gradually implement such a significant change,” Kishor said.

The Jan Suraj chief said that the success of the proposal will depend heavily on the purpose and intention behind its implementation.

He said, “If it is pursued with the right intention, then it is a welcome step, but if it is used to harm a particular class or society, then it could have negative consequences. The honesty and intention of the government’s approach will determine its success.”

The One Nation One Election was passed by the Narendra Modi government in the union cabinet on Wednesday. In Bihar, the grand alliance leaders are opposing this move of the central government while BJP, JD (U) and HAMS are in favour of it.
