Patna, July 22, 2025: Following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of Vice President citing health reasons, Bihar BJP MLA Haribhushan Thakur Bachaul has suggested that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should be made the next Vice President of India.

“It would be better if Nitish Kumar becomes the Vice President of India,” Bachaul remarked, triggering sharp reactions from the opposition.

Haribhushan Thakur’s statement has created a stir in the political circle of Bihar as many believe that it is a deliberate attempt by the BJP to sideline Nitish Kumar from electoral politics ahead of the Bihar Assembly Election 2025.

At present, Nitish Kumar is the Chief Minister and holds power in the state.

RJD hit back at the BJP after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation:

Responding to this, senior RJD leader Bhai Birendra said, “Nitish Kumar is not able to handle Bihar, what will he do as Vice President of the country replacing Jagdeep Dhankhar?”

He added that Nitish Kumar is “no longer worthy” and is “Not able to run Bihar,” dismissing the suggestion as impractical while also expressing that not everyone in the BJP would support such a move.

Meanwhile, Bhai Birendra also commented on the ongoing ruckus in the Bihar Assembly, stating that the opposition had moved an adjournment motion to debate the voter list revision in Bihar, but the government was “not ready to listen to the voice of the opposition.”

He accused the government of attempting to suppress the voice of democracy.

Vice President’s role and Rajya Sabha proceedings:

As per the constitution, the Vice President of India is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, the chair of Rajya Sabha Chairman presides over the sessions.

Currently, Harivansh Narayan Singh, the Deputy Chairman since 2020, will conduct the Rajya Sabha proceedings until a new Vice President takes charge.
