New Delhi, August 11, 2025: Opposition Alliance INDIA bloc MPs on Monday marched from Parliament to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters under the leadership of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, protesting against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar.
The Delhi Police stopped the march midway, leading to a sit-in protest and the detention of several leaders of the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, Sanjay Raut, and Sagrika Ghosh.
Delhi Police claimed no permission for the INDIA bloc to protest:
Police said no permission had been sought for the march, which was intended to cover the one-kilometer distance from Parliament House to the ECI office.
Heavy barricading had been put in place in advance. The march began around 11:30 a.m. and saw participation from leaders across opposition parties, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who joined the protest, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who was seen climbing over barricades. Priyanka Gandhi was also spotted clapping in protest.
TMC MP fainted during the INDIA bloc march:
During the confrontation, TMC MP Mitali Bagh fainted when security officials blocked the march on Parliament Street, Rahul Gandhi assisted her into a car.
The demonstration was aimed at highlighting alleged electoral malpractices and accusing the ruling BJP of manipulating the voter list to weaken the democratic process.
“This fight is not political, it is to save the Constitution. It is a fight for one person, one vote. We want a clean voter list,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said he had written to the ECI the previous evening, informing them of the planned peaceful march and the MPs’ intent to submit a memorandum on SIR.
The Election Commission, which has now become the ‘Churao Commission,’ did not respond. They later said only 30 MPs could come, but we wanted all opposition MPs to submit the document together,” Ramesh said.
Shashi Tharoor added, “As long as doubts remain over the fairness of elections, the credibility of the Election Commission is damaged. Resolving these questions is in the EC’s own interest.”
