IIT Delhi celebrates 68th foundation day, releases first-ever Alumni Impact Report.

New Delhi, January 27, 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) celebrated its 68th foundation day on Tuesday, marking the occasion with the release of its first-ever Alumni Impact Report, a comprehensive document showcasing the remarkable contribution of its 65,000+ alumni since the institute’s inception.

The Alumni Impact Report was released during the foundation day event by chief guest Dr. Gurtej S.Sandhu, IIT Delhi alumnus and Principal Fellow & Corporate Vice President Micron Technology, along with Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi.

Alumni as global ambassadors of IIT Delhi:

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gurtej S. Sandhu emphasized the crucial role alumni play in shaping institutions beyond financial contributions.

“Alumni are role models for the next generation. Their contribution goes far beyond funding—through mentorship, industry connections, and global engagement. IITs enjoy a strong worldwide reputation, and alumni play a vital role in strengthening that recognition, which ultimately benefits students,” Dr. Sandhu said.

Highlighting the global standing of IIT graduates, he added that the presence of IIT alumni at the helm of some of the world’s biggest companies reflects the institute’s far-reaching influence.

Dr. Sandhu (M. Tech, electrical engineering class of 1985, also delivered a special lecture on “The future of chip technology and the role of innovation.”

A globally acclaimed innovator, he is recognized as one of the world’s top investors, holding one of the highest numbers of patents internationally.

Addressing a press conference, IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee highlighted how the Alumni Impact Report captures the Institute’s journey of transforming students into global leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, and public servants over the last six decades.

The report demonstrates how IIT Delhi alumni have created deep economic and social impact across the world. Industry engagement—both national and international-has been central to IIT Delhi’s mission from the very beginning,” he said.

Key highlights from Alumni Impact Report:

Over 10,000 IIT Delhi alumni currently hold leadership positions in banking and finance, manufacturing, and engineering.

70% of these leaders are based in India, and over 1000 alumni serve on the boards of major global and Indian corporations.

Over 2,500 founders and co-founders have emerged from IIT Delhi, contributing significantly to the global startup and unicorn ecosystem.

Alumni-led ventures have generated 4.8 lakh direct jobs, and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi alumni have played a key role in building some of the most recognizable brands in the modern digital economy.

From its formative years to its emergence as a global leader in technical education, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi continues to shape industries, economies, and societies worldwide, driven by the enduring impact of its alumni network.
