IGIMS’s doctors successfully did heart surgery without sedation.

Patna July 12: A team of doctors at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) successfully performed an open-heart surgery on an 80-year-old man from Darbhanga without sedation.

The patient, Manish Kumar, listened to the “Hanuman Chalisa” for one and a half hours during the entire procedure.

Open heart Surgery without sedation:

The surgery was conducted by Dr. Sheel Avnish, head of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department, and his team. The patient conversed with the doctors throughout the operation, and his condition is currently stable.

Dr. Manish Mandal, the hospital superintendent, stated that the patient had a 99% blockage in his heart.

Due to his critical condition, many hospitals had declined to operate on him. The surgery was performed using the Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) method and was done free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme,” Mandal said.

Dr. Mandal noted the rarity and risk of such an operation, emphasizing that it was the first time such a complex surgery without sedation had been performed in eastern India.

Improvement of patient’s condition:

The patient’s stable condition post-surgery is attributed to the expertise of the surgical and anesthesia teams. Following the surgery, the patient was given normal food and is expected to be discharged within three to four days.

IGIMS Director Dr. Binde Kumar and Deputy Director Dr. Vibhuti Prasanna Sinha congratulated the team on the success of this rare surgery.

The patient was suffering from many diseases:

Dr. Sheel Avnish highlighted that the patient was also suffering from multiple ailments, including diabetes, kidney, lung, and asthma issues, alongside severe heart blockage.

The surgical team included Dr. Tushar Kumar, Dr. Abhinav, Dr. Samar, Head of Anesthesia Dr. PK Dubey, Dr. Alok Bharti, Dr. Alok Kumar, specialist nursing staff Shweta Kumari, Kumari Jyotsna, perfusionist Priyanshu Priya, Syed Shahrukh, and Diya Prakash.
